Greenery: 2017 Pantone Color of the Year Gift Guide

Greenery - Pantone Color of the Year 2017

Greenery – Pantone Color of the Year 2017

Pantone recently announced that the color of the year for 2017 is a shade called Greenery. Their website calls the Greenery “nature’s neutral” and provides this description of the color:

A refreshing and revitalizing shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings.

Greenery is a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew. Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate.

I’m crazy about anything in the color yellow-green! We’ve put together a gift guide to help you shop for pens, ink and journals that are similar to this shade of green.

LAMY Safari Fountain Pen

The first fountain pen that came to my mind when I saw Greenery was this LAMY Safari fountain pen in green. If you haven’t already collected a Safari in this color this is a good year to do it! We replaced the regular nib on the pen in this photo with a calligraphy nib.

This Pelikan M205 Duo Highlighter Fountain Pen in Shiny Green is a special edition, so if this pen strikes your fancy don’t wait too long to add this to your desk. Why, of course matching Pelikan M205 Duo Highlighter Ink, also in Shiny Green.

Pilot Iroshizuku Fountain Pen Ink in Bamboo Forest Green (Chiku-Rin)

Chiku-Rin or Bamboo Forest fountain pen ink is a yellow green shade similar to the color of new growth on plants in the spring, which also happens to be the same color in nature that inspired the shade Greenery. Truly a beautiful and refreshing color!

J. Herbin Vert Pre Fountain Pen Ink

J. Herbin’s Vert Pre is another one of our favorite yellow-green fountain pen inks. The top of the glass bottle has a handy built-in place to rest your pen.  J. Herbin uses all natural dyes in their inks, which makes them non-toxic and pH neutral.

Clairefontaine Coloring Books for Grownups Review

Clairefontaine Coloring Book - Flowers

Clairefontaine Coloring Book – Flowers

If you’re looking for a fun and creative way to unwind, Clairefontaine Coloring Books for Grownups are just what you need! Each coloring book contains 36 pages (18 sheets) of drawings that are begging for your imagination and your favorite pens, colored pencils, paints, markers, crayons or ink.

The illustrations vary in the amount of detail and are printed in black ink on white paper. Some of the drawings have printed black backgrounds which provide a dramatic contrast to both bright and pastel colors. Other drawings have enough white space to add your own doodles if you are so inspired. Many of the drawings take several hours to be completely colored, so this book will give you plenty of relaxing coloring time.

The Clairefontaine art paper in these coloring books is a hefty 120g and has enough tooth to it that it works well with colored pencils and even wax crayons. To read more details about how a variety different media performs on this paper check out the Life Imitates Doodles blog. I used fountain pen ink, Staedtler triplus fine-tip markers and colored pencils in my own personal Clairefontaine Flowers coloring book. The paper handled all 3 of these things very well. The only bit of ink bleed through that I experienced with this paper was when I used my glass nib pen and liberally doused the paper with fountain pen ink.

The coloring book is approximately 8″ x 8″ square – very handy for carrying in a backpack, purse or tote. The cover is a heavy weight laminated card stock. The book is glue bound, so I needed to weigh it down a bit in order for it to stay open. The Clairefontaine coloring book for grownups is available in 3 themes: birds, mandalas and flowers.

Have you tried the Clairefontaine Coloring Book for Grownups yet? What’s your favorite art tool for coloring?

Appreciate Our Teachers!

Our school teachers face many challenges and work very hard to educate our young people, so they certainly deserve much appreciation and thanks. Why not show your appreciation with a gift of quality pens and paper? One of my elementary school teacher friends shared what her picks would be:

1) Highlighters. Highlighters are part of a teacher’s daily arsenal. The skinny ones with a fine tip on the other end are my friend’s favorite, such as Zebra Optex Highlighters or Tombow Twin Tip Highlighters.

2) Colorful Pens. Smooth writing colorful pens are good for grading papers. We like the STAEDTLER Triplus Roller pens – they have an ergonomic triangular barrel and the dry-safe feature enables these pens to be left uncapped for days at a time without drying up.

3) Pencil Pouch. A leather pen & pencil pouch is just what a teacher needs to corral a bunch of these colorful pens and highlighters. The Clairefontaine Basics Trapezoid Leather Pencil Case is just what your child’s geometry teacher needs, or the Aston Leather Pencil Pouch is another classy choice.

4) Fountain Pen. This old fashioned writing tool is making a comeback! It reduces writing fatigue because compared to a ballpoint pen less pressure is required when writing. This might just be the special gift that your teacher takes home to treasure for themselves! The Pilot Metropolitan Fountain Pen is a great deal for the price, or the LAMY Safari is noteworthy for its worldwide popularity. Remember to get some extra ink refills to go along with it!

5) Book Darts. Book Darts are metal line-markers that easily slip onto a page to mark important points so that you can find them later on. They can be reused over and over again in teacher books.

6) Organizing Notebook. A teacher needs a good notebook for taking notes during teacher training and meetings. We recommend the Clairefontaine Multiple Subject Notebook or the Rhodia Meeting Book with its Cornell note-taking page format.

7) Academic Planner. Help your teacher stay organized and on top of all of their meetings, activities and classroom events with a planner designed with teachers and students in mind. The Quo Vadis Minister Academic Weekly Planner provides your teacher with a detailed 8am to 9pm weekly schedule. The Minister and other academic planners are due to arrive in our shop towards the end of May or in June.

How do you like to show your appreciation for your favorite teacher?

Pantone Color of the Year for 2015 – Marsala

Pantone has announced the color of the year for 2015 to be Marsala. Here’s what Pantone has to say about this year’s earthy wine colored choice:

Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness. This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.

If you’re in the mood to capture this color trend with your fountain pen and ink, here are our top choices:

A Smart Summer Project For Kids: Learn to Write in Cursive

Most parents are aware that for various reasons many schools have dropped learning cursive handwriting from the student curriculum. In this digital age is it worth continuing the tradition of cursive handwriting? I’m sure there are many differing opinions. One simple reason that students may want to learn cursive is that studies show writing notes by hand aids in learning more so than does taking notes with a tablet or computer. Cursive writing enables you to take notes much more quickly than printing does. WickiHow adds this incentive: “In a recent study, The College Board found that, for the essay part of the SAT, the students who wrote in cursive scored slightly higher than those who used print. They attribute it to the speed and efficiency of cursive that allows for greater focus on the content of the tests.” With school vacations on the horizon, now would be a good time to plan on making learning cursive a fun summer project for your kids.

Pelikano Junior, Turquoise, Left-Handed Nib

Pelikano Junior, Turquoise, Left-Handed Nib

One motivation for learning cursive or just improving your handwriting skills in general is using a fountain pen. This old school writing instrument writes with a very light touch, and the reduced pressure results in less writing fatigue. Plus the variety of colorful inks out there can make your hand writing look better than ever! For introducing a child to fountain pens, I would recommend a pen with a grip that helps with proper finger placement and also a nib that is easy to write with such as a medium, A, or left-handed nib. Pelikano fountain pens have been used by students for decades and they are a great fountain pen to get started with. The Pelikano comes in two versions: the Pelikano Junior for the very young student and the Pelikano for any age of student (or adult for that matter). Both of these pens come in several choices of color and nib size and have carefully designed grips that show you how to hold the pen. Don’t forget to get some extra Pelikan ink cartridges to refill your fountain pens! To browse through a variety of starter fountain pens including the Pelikano, take a look at the Beginner Fountain Pens at Writer’s Bloc.

French ruled paper is another aid to learning cursive handwriting or to improve your hand writing. It has an 8mm x 8mm grid, with additional lighter horizontal lines spaced 2mm apart inside the grid. These lines can be used as writing guides to keep your upper and lower case cursive letters a consistent size. Even though French ruled paper is difficult to find in the United States, this paper is routinely used by students in France as well as in other countries. Clairefontaine has a pretty good selection of this paper and you can order French ruled paper online at Writer’s Bloc. To find out more about French rule paper, take a look at our blog post: What is French Ruled Paper? Here are a couple of examples of practicing calligraphy and French cursive hand writing on French rule paper:

Using French Ruled Paper To Practice Hand Writing

Another good resource can be the internet. If you do a search for “cursive writing” (or something similar), you’ll find many websites and tools to help children and adults to learn cursive hand writing. Many websites have practice pages that can be printed out for students of all ages. A few years ago I wanted to learn French cursive writing and found the following guide to be very useful:

Learning cursive handwriting is something that requires patience and practice, but it can pay off with better grades in school! Isn’t that worth the effort?
