New! Choose Your Clairefontaine Notebook Cover Color

Clairefontaine Wirebound Notebook - Blue-Grey

Clairefontaine Wirebound Notebook – Blue-Grey

If you are particular about the color of your paper notebook covers here is some good news for you: Clairefontaine now has a limited selection of popular notebooks that can be purchased by individual cover color. Yes, you heard that right, you can now buy the cover color of your choice.

Here is a list of Clairefontaine notepads currently available by cover color:

The Clairefontaine Classic Side Wire Notebooks are pretty much the same as other Clairefontaine side wire notebooks, but it’s worth noting that these particular notebooks have a generous 96 sheets of paper in them. In comparison, other side wire notebooks have anywhere from 48-90 sheets.

We’re not sure if Clairefontaine will expand their offering of notebooks available by cover color. In the meantime, this is a pretty good selection to start with. We will continue to do our best to fulfill cover color requests from our customers for other kinds of Clairefontaine notebooks. If you’re like us, you love Clairefontaine notebooks not for the cover outside, but for the wonderful ultra-smooth paper inside!

New! Rhodiarama Soft-Cover Notebooks

Rhodiarama Soft Cover Notebooks - Lilac & Purple

Rhodiarama Soft Cover Notebooks – Lilac & Purple

I am in love with the new Rhodiarama Soft-Cover Notebooks now available in the USA! I’ve been test driving one for a few weeks now and definitely foresee myself continuing to use these extraordinary paper notebooks into the future.

The cover material is an Italian leatherette that has a soft feel to it – similar (or the same) as what’s used for the covers of Rhodiarama Webbies. Even though it’s not real leather all of my friends thought it was the real thing. The cover is thin and flexible which helps to make this notebook nice and compact for slipping in an out of a purse or briefcase. There is enough support provided by the soft cover that I was able to take notes even when the notebook was sitting in my lap. The cover is plain, without any printing, except for an embossed Rhodia logo in the center of the front cover.

Rhodiarama Soft Cover Notebook - Lilac

Rhodiarama Soft Cover Notebook – Lilac

The ivory colored paper inside the Rhodiarama soft-cover notebook is luxuriously smooth, fountain pen friendly 90g Clairefontaine paper. I could write on both sides of the page and the inks that I used did not feather or bleed though the paper. This paper is also pH neutral, acid free and PEFC certified. The grey lines inside the ruled notebook do not go all the way to the edge of the page and are spaced 7 mm apart. For my medium size handwriting this is perfect!

This soft-cover notebook has matching Rhodia orange endsheets, orange ribbon bookmark and orange elastic closure. Inside the back cover is an expandable orange pocket. I love that the interior pocket helps to cover the small bumps created by the elastic band closure so even when you’re writing in the last few pages of the notebook the bumps created by the pocket and elastic are very minimal (unless of course you’ve packed the pocket super full).

Rhodiarama’s soft-cover notebook contains 80 sheets of lined paper. It is described as having a glued spine and you can see that the cover material is indeed glued to the spine of the notebook. The binding itself is sewn and the notebook easily opens nice and flat.

The medium A5 size notebook is about 3/8″ thick, 5 3/4″ wide and 8 1/4″ tall. (In contrast, a medium size Rhodia Webbie is about 3/4″ thick, 5 1/2″ wide and 8 3/8″ tall.) It is currently available in 16 different cover colors: Yellow, Orange, Tangerine, Poppy, Raspberry, Lilac, Purple, Iris, Sapphire, Turquoise, Anise, Beige, Taupe, Chocolate, Black and Silver.

We keep selling out of these great Rhodia notebooks, but don’t worry we’ll be ordering more!

Are Clairefontaine Paper Notebooks Worth the Money?

Clairefontaine Medium Side-Wire Notebook

Clairefontaine Medium Side-Wire Notebook

If you are serious about writing and are wondering whether or not Clairefontaine paper notebooks are worth the cost, we would definitely have to say yes! If you’ve heard the buzz about Clairefontaine and haven’t yet given their notebooks a try, we’d like to tell you some of the reasons we highly recommend them.

Clairefontaine paper is super smooth so your pen will feel like it is gliding across the page. If you’re writing a lot every day the last thing you want to feel is your pen dragging across the paper as you write. Just thinking about a day of writing with a cheap ball point pen on cheap paper makes me feel fatigued!  Your hand will thank you for the exceptionally smooth writing experience that these notebooks provide.

The paper is high quality and 90g so you can write on both sides of the page without any ink significantly showing through to the other side of the page (with most pens – not so great with Sharpies). If you’re writing in cheap notebooks and only use one side of each page, the cost per page could actually be higher than what you would pay per page in a Clairefontaine notebook where you can use both sides of each page. You can even use both sides of the page when you’re writing with a fountain pen.

This paper works fabulously with fountain pens! Many writers have already discovered that fountain pens provide a very satisfying writing experience and can reduce writing fatigue. Many cheap paper notebooks on the market today do not work well with fountain pens. Fountain pen ink will feather and bleed through a lot of cheap paper and you may even find your nib poking through or tearing the page. This is not the case with Clairefontaine paper. It’s ultra smooth and minimizes any feathering or bleed through of fountain pen ink. The fact that this paper is extra-white means it will make your ink colors pop!

Clairefontaine Side-Staple Notebook

Clairefontaine Side-Staple Notebook

Clairefontaine makes their own paper, which means it is of consistent quality, and they have control over the environmental impact of the manufacturing process. This is in contrast to cheap paper which is of inconsistent quality and can have dubious origins. Clairefontaine goes out of their way to manufacture their paper in France using environmentally responsible methods. For example, their paper is made from pulp and wood by-products from forests independently certified by PEFC or FSC as sustainably managed. The paper is chlorine free and uses water-based ink made from vegetable oil pigments. Clairefontaine has reduced its water consumption through an advanced recycling method. Any water returned to the River Meurthe after manufacturing is cleaner than when it arrived at the mill. Waste from the water treatment plant is converted into agricultural compost. Clairefontaine operates a dual power generation system (electricity and steam) which supplies 80% of the mill’s own energy needs.

Clairefontaine paper notebooks are well designed and provide a fantastic writing experience, therefore the price is worth it for their superior quality. If you love writing they are definitely worth seeking out over the cheap alternatives. The right notebook does make a difference!

If you want to give Clairefontaine a try, here’s a list of some of their lower priced paper notebooks to get you started:

Clairefontaine Music Notebook Review

Are you a modern day Beethoven or Mozart? Jot down your inspirations and melodies in a Clairefontaine Music Notebook that’s designed for music composition.

The greatest advantage of the Clairefontaine musician’s notebook is it’s high quality, super smooth 90 g paper. You can safely write on both sides of each page with minimal show through of pencil or ink, and little ink bleed-through or feathering – even if you use a fountain pen! Take a look at the scan of my writing test (below). The only ink that showed a bit of bleed through was Noodler’s Bernanke Blue fountain pen ink.

The paper is bright white printed with a violet lined musical staff – 8 staves with no clef on each side of the page, designed for general parts or lead sheets. The lines of the staves are spaced 2 mm apart, and each stave is evenly spaced about 15 mm apart. The lines are printed all the way to the edge of the page.

This sheet music notebook is in landscape format with a double-wire binding on the shorter edge of the paper. The paper is A4 size, approximately 8.25″ x 11.75″ and the overall notebook size including the spiral is about 8.25″ x 12″. Clairefontaine also makes an A4 portrait format Music Staff Notepad with the same great paper and glue binding so that you can tear off the sheets if you wish.

The notebook cover is made from laminated card stock. Each notebook contains 25 sheets of acid-free, pH neutral paper made from forests certified by PEFC or FSC as sustainably managed.

I’ve been studying to play the Irish penny whistle for about a year now (whistles in the photos are from Burke Whistles), but most of my learning is by ear and my musical notation is terrible! Maybe one day I can do this notebook justice. Do you use a blank sheet music notebook? What do you like to use it for?

The paper is acid free, pH neutral and is made from materials sourced from from sustainably managed forests. Frequently Asked Questions about Disc Bound Notebooks

Myndology Luna Disc Bound Notebooks

Myndology Luna Disc Bound Notebooks

Disc bound notebooks have specially punched loose sheets of paper that are bound together by small circular discs. This binding system makes it easy to  customize, organize and re-organize your notebook without ruining your work or your notebook! Companies such as Myndology, Clairefontaine, Levenger, Staples, Atoma and Rollabind have their own versions of disc bound notebooks. We’d like to answer a few frequently asked questions about this style of notebook.

Is the paper interchangeable among the different brands of disc bound notebooks?

The answer is yes and no. The shape of the discs and shape of the hole punched in the paper of many brands of disc bound notebooks (such as Myndology, Clairefontaine, Staples Arc, Levenger Circa, Rollabind, Martha Steward and Atoma) is similar and therefore the paper can be used with different brands of discs. Mixing brands can make it a little bit more difficult to turn pages, so if this bothers you for best results stick to the same brand.

The “no” part of the answer is that paper sizes (and insert sizes) vary from brand to brand which might mean you don’t want to mix brands. For example, if you try to fit a metric A4 size piece of paper (approx 8.25″ x 11.75″) inside an American notebook that takes 8.5″ x 11″ paper, you’ll find that the A4 size paper is too tall so it sticks out the top/bottom of the American notebook. Some medium size American notebooks are 6.5″ x 8.5″, but a metric A5 medium size notebook is 6.5″ X 8.25″ and so on. However, it could be fine if you are using small sheets of paper inside a large size of notebook.

Are paper refills available?

Yes, most companies offer a variety of paper refills. One exception is Clairefontaine which, as of this date, has not yet made separate paper refills available for their disc bound notebooks.  A suggestion for Clairefontaine users: If you’re using a Clairefontaine Clairing Koverbook you can buy a cheaper card stock covered Clairefontaine Clairing notebook and use the paper inside that as a refill for your Koverbook. Myndology offers paper refills with college ruled, graph or plain paper.

Myndology Plain Paper Refill

Myndology Plain Paper Refill

Can I punch my own paper and make my own refills?

Yes, several companies offer hole punches so that you can make your own paper refills.

Does it matter what kind of paper I use for making my own refills?

Yes, paper quality and weight do make a difference. Good quality paper that is a heavier weight than your average 20 lb copy paper will give you best results in your disc bound notebook. Clairefontaine disc bound notebooks contain 90 g bright white paper that works beautifully with fountain pens.

Can I use a punch to make my own covers?

Yes, many punches are strong enough to punch through card stock and even light weight plastic.

Can I buy accessories like dividers?

Yes, dividers and other accessories are commonly available. Myndology offers folders with pockets and 8 movable tabs for both medium and large size notebooks. Clairefontaine does not sell accessories separately, instead they include 2 book mark flaps with an integrated clear pockets to store documents, one adhesive label and 5 repositionable polypro dividers with their disc bound medium and large size Koverbooks.

Can I buy discs separately?

Many companies allow you to purchase discs separately so that you can make your own custom disc bound notebooks.  The discs are made from a variety of different materials and come in different colors. Clairefontaine does not make discs available separately, but Myndology does.

Can I get different sizes of discs?

If you buy discs separately, you’ve got a bigger choice of disc size to choose from. We’ve seen discs that range in size anywhere from 3″ to 0.25″.

Of course, products change over time so some of the information in this blog post may change over time too. Do you have any tips you’d like to share about disc bound notebooks? Any questions? New discoveries? Ideas? Let us know!

Clairefontaine Coloring Books for Grownups Review

Clairefontaine Coloring Book – Flowers

If you’re looking for a fun and creative way to unwind, Clairefontaine Coloring Books for Grownups are just what you need! Each coloring book contains 36 pages (18 sheets) of drawings that are begging for your imagination and your favorite pens, colored pencils, paints, markers, crayons or ink.

The illustrations vary in the amount of detail and are printed in black ink on white paper. Some of the drawings have printed black backgrounds which provide a dramatic contrast to both bright and pastel colors. Other drawings have enough white space to add your own doodles if you are so inspired. Many of the drawings take several hours to be completely colored, so this book will give you plenty of relaxing coloring time.

The Clairefontaine art paper in these coloring books is a hefty 120g and has enough tooth to it that it works well with colored pencils and even wax crayons. To read more details about how a variety different media performs on this paper check out the Life Imitates Doodles blog. I used fountain pen ink, Staedtler triplus fine-tip markers and colored pencils in my own personal Clairefontaine Flowers coloring book. The paper handled all 3 of these things very well. The only bit of ink bleed through that I experienced with this paper was when I used my glass nib pen and liberally doused the paper with fountain pen ink.

The coloring book is approximately 8″ x 8″ square – very handy for carrying in a backpack, purse or tote. The cover is a heavy weight laminated card stock. The book is glue bound, so I needed to weigh it down a bit in order for it to stay open. The Clairefontaine coloring book for grownups is available in 3 themes: birds, mandalas and flowers.

Your Fall Stationery Style Guide

Do you like to change your stationery supplies with the change of the season? I do! Now that autumn is here the ink in my fountain pens changes to warm, rich fall colors such as orange, gold, maroon and brown. Of course, it is necessary to select a harmonizing pen and notebook to complete the ensemble. Here are some of our fall stationery favorites:

Yellow Leaf

Yellow & Gold: One of my favorite everyday writing tools is the LAMY Safari fountain pen which is available in a cheery bright yellow that reminds me of the autumn color of some maple or birch tree leaves. Yellow ink is not practical for regular handwriting writing, so I like to use a golden amber shade such as J. Herbin Ambre de Birmanie fountain pen ink. If you’re new to fountain pens, and you’re going to use bottled ink in your LAMY Safari or Al-Star pen, you’ll need to get a LAMY Z24 ink converter.

Orange Pumpkin

Orange: I love seeing all of the colorful autumn squash in the supermarket this time of year. The star of this fall’s orange fountain pens is the limited edition copper-orange LAMY Al-Star pen. This relative of the LAMY Safari fountain pen is made from light-weight aluminum with a metallic finish. LAMY created special copper-orange ink cartridges just to match this fountain pen. A couple of my favorite orange bottled inks with nice shading are Noodler’s Apache Sunset and Noodler’s Habanero ink. Want a paper notebook with an orange cover? Go no further than Rhodia‘s famous orange notepads available in all sorts of styles and sizes with fountain pen friendly paper.

Red Maple Leaves

Red & Maroon: Doesn’t this orange Rhodia notepad look stylish next to these red Japanese maple leaves? The color of these leaves makes me think of the deep burgundy red color of the clear resin Bourgogne Platinum 3776 Century Fountain Pen. Pilot Iroshizuku Fountain Pen Ink in Momiji or Autumn Leaves is a red shade emulating the bright red leaves that are iconic of a Japanese autumn landscape. The ivory paper inside the red Quo Vadis Habana Journal complements the warm, autumn shades of ink that I use this time of year.

Brown Turkey Tail Fungus

Brown: I absolutely adore anything in tortoiseshell, and the Stipula Tuscany Dreams Peposo Fountain Pen in Brown Tortoiseshell is no exception! It’s a pity that this manly pen is too large for my small hands. This pen pairs well with J. Herbin Lie de The Ink Cartridges or Pilot Iroshizuku Wild Chestnut ink which is a brown color similar to the shade of a ripe, fallen chestnut shell during autumn. Aston Leather’s pen cases in golden caramel Tan or dark Brown are going to look great with and provide protection for any of your fall writing instruments.
