What’s the difference between Clairefontaine and Rhodia?

Both Clairefontaine and Rhodia brands of paper notebooks have some of the best paper in the world for writing and they are loved by writers from many lands. What makes Clairefontaine and Rhodia different?

Today they are owned by the same parent company Exacompta Clairefontaine, but originally they were two different companies. Clairefontaine began making paper in the Vosges region of France in 1858 and began making stationery products in 1890. They were the first company to make school notebooks in France.

Henri and Robert Verilhac, two brothers from a family of paper merchants, created the first Rhodia notepads in 1934 in Sechilienne, France. The name Rhodia comes from the Rhone River and legend has it that the Rhodia logo with two fir trees symbolizes the two founding brothers. Rhodia was purchased by Clairefontaine in 1997.

Clairefontaine’s signature notebooks are for students and come in a variety of sizes, colors and binding styles. The paper inside is bright white 90g French ruled or college ruled.

Rhodia’s signature notepads are top staple bound and contain bright white 80g graph paper with a violet 5 mm x 5 mm grid. They are easily recognizable by their bright orange cover and appeal to artists and designers.

Rhodia Top-Staple Graph Paper Notepads

Rhodia Top-Staple Graph Paper Notepads

Clairefontaine manufactures both their own paper and the paper contained in Rhodia notepads so it is consistently of the same high quality. This paper is well known for its extra-smooth finish and its ability to handle fountain pen ink, reducing or eliminating any ink bleeding through or showing through the paper.

Over time, both Clairefontaine and Rhodia have expanded their selection of paper notebooks to include a wide variety of products for all sorts of different writing and creative needs. You can take a look at a large selection of their extensive product line at Writer’s Bloc.

Which one should I buy: Clairefontaine or Rhodia? Both are great choices! If you’re looking for specific features, in the USA the brand that has the best selection is as follows:

If you like plain, conservative notebook covers try the Clairefontaine Basics series or get a Rhodia notebook with a black cover. Most Clairefontaine paper has a weight of 90g. If you prefer a lighter weight of paper Rhodia has a good selection of 80g paper (although they have a lot of 90g paper as well). Take a look at the Clairefontaine and Rhodia paper writing tests at the bottom of this blog post if you’d like to see a comparison.

If you’re going to spend a lot of time writing you may as well enjoy it! For school or college purposes we would recommend a pen that’s not too expensive that can be filled with washable blue ink cartridges (more info on that in a moment). When you’re on the go, ink cartridges are easier to use than bottled ink and both the LAMY Safari and Pelikan Pelikano have washable blue ink cartridges with a decent ink capacity: LAMY Blue ink cartridges or Pelikan Royal Blue giant ink cartridges.

New! Clairefontaine Notebook with Numbered Pages

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook

If you have the need to refer back to specific notes at a future date after you’ve written them, the Clairefontaine My Essential paginated notebook is a useful organizational tool. It’s similar to some other notebooks in the Clairefontaine Basics series (Age-Bag in Europe), but it has it’s own special features that make it unique.

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook – numbered pages

Besides the fantastic paper, the most important features of this notebook are the numbered pages and table of contents. The first numbered page starts with a 1 in the lower right corner and continues all the way to 184 on the final page. In front of the numbered pages is an eight page table of contents for keeping track of what’s in your notes and where. Each page in the table of contents has 24 lines to write in a page number and a subject.

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook – table of contents

This notebook contains ruled paper with an 8 mm space between the lines. The lines and numbers are printed in a pale grey color and there is a header box on the top of each page to write in a title, date or whatever else you can think of. The lines do not go all the way to the edge of each page.

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook – date and title space

The ivory colored paper in the My Essential notebook is 90 g – similar or the same as the paper in Rhodia Webnotebooks. It is extremely smooth to help your pen glide across the page. It works great with fountain pens and there is very little (if any) ink that feathers, bleeds through or shows through the page. You can easily use both sides of each page without worry (see the results of our writing test at the end of this post). The paper is acid-free and PEFC certified.

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook – perforated pages in back

The last 8 sheets in the notebook (pages 169 to 184) are microperforated along the inside margin so they can be removed if you want. The notebook binding is stitched to keep the pages from falling out, so these microperforated sheets are handy if you need to remove a single piece of paper. The stitched binding allows you to open the notebook and have it lay flat on your desk.

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook – pocket

Inside the front and the back covers is a small corner pocket handy for holding a few notes, receipts or business cards. It’s about 4″ x 4″ in size with a rounded corner and it is not expandable. The pages in the notebook also have rounded corners.

The My Essentials paginated notebook has a matching elastic strap to keep it closed and one matching ribbon bookmark. The endsheets match the ivory color of the paper. I’m not sure what the weight of the endsheet paper is other than it is heavier than the 90 g paper inside. The front endsheet has a few lines to write in your name or other information. The back endsheet has some printed information about Clairefontaine.

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook

Clairefontaine Paginated Notebook – red cover

This notebook is A5 size, or about 6″ x 8.25.” The cover is made from textured hardboard, the same as the cover material used for other Clairefontaine Basics notebooks. It’s semi-flexible, and this particular notebook does not have a cloth spine. The cover is plain except for an embossed Clairefontaine logo in the lower right of the front cover. Currently the cover colors include Black, Tan, Red, Green and Blue.

What would you use the Clairefontaine “My Essential” Paginated Notebook for? Recipes? College notes? Travel Journal? Meeting notes? Labs?

Here is a list of Clairefontaine notepads currently available by cover color:

The Clairefontaine Classic Side Wire Notebooks are pretty much the same as other Clairefontaine side wire notebooks, but it’s worth noting that these particular notebooks have a generous 96 sheets of paper in them. In comparison, other side wire notebooks have anywhere from 48-90 sheets.

We’re not sure if Clairefontaine will expand their offering of notebooks available by cover color. In the meantime, this is a pretty good selection to start with. We will continue to do our best to fulfill cover color requests from our customers for other kinds of Clairefontaine notebooks. Are Clairefontaine Paper Notebooks Worth the Money?

Clairefontaine Medium Side-Wire Notebook

Clairefontaine Medium Side-Wire Notebook

If you are serious about writing and are wondering whether or not Clairefontaine paper notebooks are worth the cost, we would definitely have to say yes! If you’ve heard the buzz about Clairefontaine and haven’t yet given their notebooks a try, we’d like to tell you some of the reasons we highly recommend them.

Clairefontaine paper is super smooth so your pen will feel like it is gliding across the page. If you’re writing a lot every day the last thing you want to feel is your pen dragging across the paper as you write. Just thinking about a day of writing with a cheap ball point pen on cheap paper makes me feel fatigued!  Your hand will thank you for the exceptionally smooth writing experience that these notebooks provide.

The paper is high quality and 90g so you can write on both sides of the page without any ink significantly showing through to the other side of the page (with most pens – not so great with Sharpies). If you’re writing in cheap notebooks and only use one side of each page, the cost per page could actually be higher than what you would pay per page in a Clairefontaine notebook where you can use both sides of each page. You can even use both sides of the page when you’re writing with a fountain pen.

This paper works fabulously with fountain pens! Many writers have already discovered that fountain pens provide a very satisfying writing experience and can reduce writing fatigue. Many cheap paper notebooks on the market today do not work well with fountain pens. Fountain pen ink will feather and bleed through a lot of cheap paper and you may even find your nib poking through or tearing the page. This is not the case with Clairefontaine paper. It’s ultra smooth and minimizes any feathering or bleed through of fountain pen ink. The fact that this paper is extra-white means it will make your ink colors pop!

Clairefontaine Side-Staple Notebook

Clairefontaine Side-Staple Notebook

Clairefontaine makes their own paper, which means it is of consistent quality, and they have control over the environmental impact of the manufacturing process. This is in contrast to cheap paper which is of inconsistent quality and can have dubious origins. Clairefontaine goes out of their way to manufacture their paper in France using environmentally responsible methods. For example, their paper is made from pulp and wood by-products from forests independently certified by PEFC or FSC as sustainably managed. The paper is chlorine free and uses water-based ink made from vegetable oil pigments. Clairefontaine has reduced its water consumption through an advanced recycling method. Any water returned to the River Meurthe after manufacturing is cleaner than when it arrived at the mill. Waste from the water treatment plant is converted into agricultural compost. Clairefontaine operates a dual power generation system (electricity and steam) which supplies 80% of the mill’s own energy needs.

Clairefontaine Large Top-Wire Notebook

Clairefontaine Large Top-Wire Notebook

Clairefontaine paper notebooks are well designed and provide a fantastic writing experience, therefore the price is worth it for their superior quality. If you love writing they are definitely worth seeking out over the cheap alternatives. The right notebook does make a difference!

If you want to give Clairefontaine a try, here’s a list of some of their lower priced paper notebooks to get you started:

Clairefontaine Music Notebook Review

Are you a modern day Beethoven or Mozart? Jot down your inspirations and melodies in a Clairefontaine Music Notebook that’s designed for music composition.

The greatest advantage of the Clairefontaine musician’s notebook is it’s high quality, super smooth 90 g paper. You can safely write on both sides of each page with minimal show through of pencil or ink, and little ink bleed-through or feathering – even if you use a fountain pen! Take a look at the scan of my writing test (below). The only ink that showed a bit of bleed through was Noodler’s Bernanke Blue fountain pen ink.

The paper is bright white printed with a violet lined musical staff – 8 staves with no clef on each side of the page, designed for general parts or lead sheets. The lines of the staves are spaced 2 mm apart, and each stave is evenly spaced about 15 mm apart. The lines are printed all the way to the edge of the page.

This sheet music notebook is in landscape format with a double-wire binding on the shorter edge of the paper. The paper is A4 size, approximately 8.25″ x 11.75″ and the overall notebook size including the spiral is about 8.25″ x 12″. Clairefontaine also makes an A4 portrait format Music Staff Notepad with the same great paper and glue binding so that you can tear off the sheets if you wish.

The notebook cover is made from laminated card stock. Each notebook contains 25 sheets of acid-free, pH neutral paper made from forests certified by PEFC or FSC as sustainably managed.

I’ve been studying to play the Irish penny whistle for about a year now (whistles in the photos are from Burke Whistles), but most of my learning is by ear and my musical notation is terrible! Maybe one day I can do this notebook justice. Do you use a blank sheet music notebook? What do you like to use it for?

Clairefontaine is a French paper manufacturer that strives to make the world’s best writing paper. Multiple Subject Notebooks are part of their lineup that features paper with a perfect satin finish for maximum smoothness while writing.

Each Multiple Subject notebook contains tabbed pages that come in 4 alternating pastel colors: blue, pink, green and yellow. Depending on what size of notebook you buy, the number of tabs and the number of pages varies. Here’s what you get in the 3 sizes of Multiple Subject Notebooks that are available in the USA:

The calcium carbonate coating on this 90g paper gives it an exceptional smoothness and helps to prevent ink from feathering or bleeding through the paper. You can write on both sides of each page even when using a fountain pen! Take a look at the results of our writing test in the scans below. The paper is acid free, pH neutral and is made from materials sourced from from sustainably managed forests. Multiple Subject Notebooks contain graph paper (squared) with pale violet lines that are spaced 5mm apart.

The notebook covers are made from laminated card stock and come in a variety of colors. The bottom right corner of the front cover has a Clairefontaine logo, and the back cover has another logo with the company website and information particular to the notebook. Each notebook has a double-wire spiral binding on the side.
